Profile
Located in downtown Oshawa, the Rainbow Family Restaurant is a legendary local landmark that has been a staple of the Durham Region since 1958. Often referred to as “The House of Bacon,” it is one of the oldest family-owned establishments in Canada, currently operated by second-generation owner Chef Louie Givelas. The restaurant is famous for its classic 1950s-style diner atmosphere and massive portion sizes, particularly its signature hand-cut peameal bacon, which is cut on the premises rather than by a machine. Its menu features hearty “obscene” breakfast items like the Rainbokenstein’s Monster and the M.A.D. Louie, alongside the Original GMC Breakfast, a nod to Oshawa’s history as an automotive hub. Beyond its food, the Rainbow is celebrated for its community roots, having once operated 24 hours a day to serve the shift workers of the nearby General Motors plant.
